The Winchester Model 1890 is a slide-action repeating rifle produced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in the late 19th. This Model 1890 was manufactured in 1911, features a 24' barrel, and is in good condition. I would be grateful for any information you could provide. For sale is a Winchester Model 1890 pump-action rifle in. Total guns produced is from 1890 to 1941 is 764,365 Serial number 1 thru 64,520 fall in. Would have it been possible to purchase the rifle this way, or would the family have needed a gunsmith to made the modification. Serial number puts manufacturing date as 1897. My father told me that the rifle had been modified so that it could no longer be used as a repeating weapon - in other words, it can only be loaded through the breach and must be reloaded upon each firing. I did, however, find what I believe to be the serial number: 246,136 also the patent marking, June 26, 88 Dec 4, 92. Winchester Model 62 his little brother could hit flying fish on the wing. I understand there should be a number on the lower tang, but the neck of the stock was wrapped in tape (presumably for better grip?) by an ancestor, and I don't care to remove it. From some preliminary internet research, I find that it is a Winchester Model 1890, second model, standard, take-down. Please bear with me as I know little firearm terminology. I also wasn't sure if it was a second model take-down (due to serial number - 228697) or is it a more common third model take-down? Not sure if this means the barrel has been replaced? I have attached pictures as well. Fourth, while not all of your pictures are great quality, they do show all of the necessary parts of the rifle. Third, the stocks on your rifle are walnut versus gumwood. There are no makers marks on the barrel or receiver. Second, it should not have a serial number on the bottom front of the receiver frame, and all knowledgable Winchester people know that. The rifle cycles fine and the bore is in good shape with rifling visible and sharp. Winchester Repeating Arms Co New Haven, Conn. It has some minor pitting on the right side. The receiver has no visible serial number. The rear tang has Model 1890, Winchester, Trademark stamped into it. The fore grip is 5" long with 12 grooves. The wood is in good shape, with a few minor dings and scratches, nothing major. It has the octagonal barrel and has 22 Long stamped where the barrel meets the receiver. During the 4+ year production run, a number of design changes were made, and with them, Winchester changed the serial number marking to include an A above the serial number, and later a B. From this info it was manufactured in 1905. Beginning at s/n 34150, there is a relatively brief intermixing of Model 1893 serial numbers with the Model 1897 serial numbers. Can you please estimate the value of this rifle? I looked up the serial number 228697 in the Winchester pocket guide.
